Business development is identifying, pursuing, and creating opportunities for growth and value creation in a business. It involves strategic planning, market research, networking, partnership building, sales, negotiation, and deal closing. For entrepreneurs to grow their companies and find long-term success, business development is crucial. But how do you plan and execute effective business development activities? How do you measure and optimize your results? How do you align your business development goals with your overall vision and mission? This is where a business development roadmap comes in handy.

What exactly is a Business Development Roadmap?

What exactly is a Business Development Roadmap?

A business development roadmap is a document that outlines the objectives, strategies, tactics, and milestones for your business development efforts. It helps you to:

  • Define your target market, customer segments, value proposition and competitive advantage

  • Determine which growth and value-creation opportunities are the most promising and rank them accordingly

  • Establish clear and realistic goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) for your business development activities

  • Design and implement action plans to execute your business development strategies

  • Track and evaluate your progress and performance

  • Adjust and improve your business development plans based on feedback and data

A business development roadmap is not a static document that you create once and forget. It is a dynamic and flexible tool that you should update and revise regularly as your business evolves and as you learn from your experiences. A business development roadmap should also be aligned with your overall business strategy, vision, and mission, as well as with your product roadmap, marketing roadmap, and financial roadmap.

How to Create a Business Development Roadmap?

How to Create a Business Development Roadmap?

There is no one-size-fits-all template for creating a business development roadmap. However, here are some general steps that you can follow to create your own:

Conduct a SWOT-based Assessment

A SWOT analysis is a framework that aids in evaluating the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities, and threats facing your company. It assists you in determining your competitive advantage, your weaknesses and obstacles, your target markets and customers, and the outside variables that could have an impact on your company.

Define your Objectives

Determine your goals for your business growth initiatives based on the results of your SWOT assessment. What particular results are you hoping to achieve? What benefits do you want to provide to your stakeholders and clients? Which metrics are you looking to improve? Aim for SMART goals, which stand for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Choose your Strategies

Based on your objectives, choose the best strategies to pursue them. What are the main approaches that you will use to reach your target market, generate leads, build relationships, close deals, and create value? For example, some common business development strategies are: inbound marketing, outbound marketing, referrals, partnerships, licensing, franchising, mergers and acquisitions, etc.

Plan your Tactics

Based on your strategies, plan the specific actions that you will take to implement them. What are the tasks that you need to complete? What are the resources that you need to allocate? What are the tools that you need to use? How will you coordinate and communicate with your team members and partners? For example, some common business development tactics are email campaigns, social media posts, webinars, events, cold emails, cold calls, proposals, contracts, etc.

Set your Milestones

Based on your tactics, set the key milestones that you want to achieve along the way. What are the major deliverables that you need to produce? What are the deadlines that you need to meet? What are the checkpoints that you need to review? How will you celebrate your wins and learn from your failures?

Create your Roadmap

Based on your milestones, create a visual representation of your business development roadmap. You can use various formats and tools to create your roadmap, such as spreadsheets, diagrams, charts, or software applications like monday.com, Wrike, Visor, Ignition,…. The main elements that you should include in your roadmap are timeline (start date, end date), objectives (what), strategies (how), tactics (who/where/when), milestones (deliverables/deadlines), KPIs (metrics/results) and status (progress/feedback).

Execute your Roadmap

Based on your roadmap, execute your business development activities according to your plan. Follow the steps that you have outlined in your roadmap, and monitor your progress and performance using the KPIs that you have defined in advance.

Review and Update your Roadmap

Based on the data and feedback that you collect from executing your roadmap, review and update it regularly. Evaluate what is working well and what is not working well in terms of achieving your objectives. Identify what are the challenges and risks that you face or may face in the future. Adjust and improve your plan accordingly by adding new elements or modifying existing ones. You can maximize your business growth strategy and make the required adjustments by routinely evaluating and analyzing the business development roadmap. Moreover, getting input from clients and stakeholders might yield insightful information that will help you improve your plan even more.
